Guide to Camera-Based Assessments with MoveLab® Connect

For camera based assessments MoveLab® uses artificial intelligence that is based on human vision, and in many ways it behaves in the same way. MoveLab®Connect provides step-by-step bitesized guidance for patients to ensure that they understand the requirements for each specific assessment, and are able to perform assessments successfully. This guide is therefore not essential reading, but is designed to introduce the same considerations.

Do I need to prepare a space? Patients will need to clear a space, in view of their camera, to perform the assessment. The amount of space will depend upon the assessment being performed. I.e. a Timed-Up-and-Go assessment will require more clear space than a bodyweight squat.
Can there be other people in view of the camera? The system is programmed to detect any person in view of the camera. There should be no other people in view of your camera besides the patient performing the assessment.
Does lighting matter? Yes, computer vision works much like human vision and needs good lighting to see clearly. Turn on any lights and let in as much natural daylight as possible.
What should I wear? Patients should avoid wearing loose clothing that completely covers key joints like knees and elbows. Tight fitting clothing over these joints should not cause an issue.
Does it matter if I am not in full view of my camera? If practical try to record your whole body. As a minimum we recommend filming the head, and specific joints involved in the movement, i.e.
> For Left Elbow Flexion & Extension at minimum try to film the head, left shoulder, elbow and wrist
> For Timed-Up-and-Go the whole body will be required
Does it matter which direction my body faces? The required positioning and orientation will vary, depending upon the specific assessment to be tracked. Please review the specific guidance when you review your assessment in MoveLab. An example snippet from Timed-Up-and -Go is shown below. This will be supplemented by a more detailed written description within MoveLab.
